![]() ![]() Dragging out the last surviving members of rock’s greatest band and filling in the gaps with people who likely weren’t alive when the original acts were filling arenas is not the way to remember them. The tears by my friend over Don Henley’s admission that The Eagles will likely fly no longer are understandable, but let’s be real when it comes to some of rock’s greatest bands. I’ve got photos from 1981 to prove it.įor those of you still along for this meandering ride I’ll end with the thoughts of a friend recently who was reflecting on the recent death of one of the founding members of The Eagles, Glenn Frey. I know it’s not the preferred method to take down the lake level, but it sure is a scenic way to do it. Ramping up the outflows right now could be problematic with all the high flows already existing downstream. I wonder if it’ll fill so fast that they’re forced to open the spillway gates. With about one million acre feet to go to full pool – there are some (including myself) who think it’ll fill by May 1 – it looks like the reservoir may be a hot spot this summer for house boats and bikinis. When the weather’s just right and the storms track across the region like they have lately it doesn’t take long for the lake to add a couple million acre feet of storage. The Pit River, McCloud River and Sacramento River feed this reservoir. Shasta Lake sits in a basin that captures the runoff from several watersheds. It wasn’t long ago that I was up there photographing the lake as it neared 200 feet from the same gates. As I write this the lake is just 36 feet short of the spillway gates at the top of the dam. Speaking of water and for those of you who haven’t been watching Shasta Lake in northern California – whether by website or in person – there’s an amazing thing happening right now. ![]() If the well-educated author isn’t going to take time to get it right why should I waste my time correcting his lies with the same words many more than just me have repeated over and over to no apparent avail? ![]() ![]() “We’re just moving email to another place and it’s less searchable.” -Sarah Peck, founder and executive director of Startup PregnantĪlso, workplace software doesn’t seem to have supplanted the very thing it was supposed to fix: email. ![]() After a while, the software goes from helping you work to making it impossible to get work done. ![]() Keeping up with these conversations can seem like a full-time job. Power users sending out more than 1,000 messages per day are “not an exception.” On average, employees at large companies are each sending more than 200 Slack messages per week, according to Time Is Ltd., a productivity-analytics company that taps into workplace programs - including Slack, calendar apps, and the Office Suite - in order to give companies recommendations on how to be more productive. The addition of yet another communications tool can result in a surfeit of information. Much like the ubiquitous open-floor plan, this type of software is meant to get different parts of a company working together, to break down hierarchies, to spark chance interactions and innovations. That’s happened to an extent, but other problems have arisen. McKinsey figured people would be able to more easily and quickly accomplish these task using new workplace software. “The average interaction worker spends an estimated 28 percent of the workweek managing email and nearly 20 percent looking for internal information or tracking down colleagues who can help with specific tasks,” according to the study. These services are necessary for keeping companies running smoothly, as work increasingly moves remote and global and as “knowledge work” - professional, managerial, or technical occupations like a computer programmer or scientist or data journalist - proliferates.Ĭonsulting firm McKinsey said back in 2012 that workplace communications technologies have the potential to increase employee productivity by up to 25 percent. This type of workplace software is part of what’s currently a $3.5 billion global “team collaborative applications” market, according to research firm IDC, forecast to grow nearly 70 percent in the next three years. (Recode and Vox use Slack for story planning and news sharing as well as for posting pictures of our children and pets.) These services charge on a monthly, per-user basis and offer everything from video conferencing to workflow structuring to spaces for digital water-cooler gossip. And Facebook has entered the game, too, with Workplace, an attempt to get its 2.7 billion users to employ its products in more productive ways than sharing conspiracy theories. Google’s G Suite includes Gmail, Hangouts Chat and Meet, and Calendar as well as its cloud-based document-sharing programs. Teams comes as part of Microsoft’s pervasive Office offerings like Word and Excel. Slack is one of numerous types of workplace software that companies are using to facilitate collaboration and communication in an increasingly digital world. If wielded poorly, it can even make it worse. “Imagine what you’ll accomplish together.”īut an increasing emphasis on new technology to moderate our workdays isn’t necessarily making our work better or making us more productive. “Slack is where work happens,” reads the company’s website copy. Or, more often, a nonlinear argument is unfurling as everyone tries to get the last word in first, and chaos envelops the very system meant to keep you organized. Important news is breaking and everyone wants to know. It can mean a few things: A vibrant discussion is taking place in which you and your colleagues are excitedly collaborating around a central topic. If you’ve spent any time with Slack, you’ve likely seen this message float below the text field of your company’s communications software. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Select your device for play with Logo Quiz Logos game and access the download area:ĭownload for IOS Improve your memory with word gamesĭid you know that playing word games like Logoquiz improves some of your mental abilities like memory, problem solving, etc. Would you like to try it? Thanks to an update in Android 12 for TV (which comes pre-installed), there's a new sign-on process that works by using your phone to scan a QR code in the Google Home app. There's the Chromecast itself which plugs directly into your TV via HDMI, a separate remote with a built-in mic and Google Assistant button for voice controls and a power adapter with a USB cable that you can use in case your TV can't supply enough juice using only HDMI. I'm not going to bore you with the typical design section, because the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is incredibly straightforward and almost a carbon copy of its predecessor. And from where I'm sitting, that's just fine, because while it's limited to HD content, this thing delivers essentially the same great watching experience that we loved on the original. The only major difference (at least on the outside) is updated packaging that features a label that says "HD." So instead of supporting 4K displays, this new more affordable Chromecast is aimed squarely at people looking to stream shows and movies on 1080p screens. ![]() The new Chromecast with Google TV still has a puckish oval design, it comes packaged with an identical remote and even the OS powering everything is (largely) unchanged. ![]() Google's latest streaming dongle is so similar to the previous one that when I first opened it up, I experienced a little deja vu. ![]() |
